And In Utah News

From the Salt Lake Tribune

A bill pushed by gay-rights advocates that would enable heirs - besides spouses, children and parents - to sue in the event of a wrongful death passed the Utah Legislature's Judiciary Interim Committee on Wednesday.

But only after a tense debate over whether the measure, which also would protect gays and transgender people who lose a partner, violates Utah's constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.

In the end, the committee voted 11-4 to give the bill, sponsored by Sen. Scott McCoy, D-Salt Lake City, a favorable recommendation after language was added that explicitly states the protection "cannot be construed" as treating a same-sex relationship as a marriage or a civil union.
From the Salt Lake Tribune:

Proponents of traditional marriage protested the measure, which is part of a collection of legislation aimed at bolstering gay rights. That effort, launched by Equality Utah, has been dubbed the Common Ground Initiative.

"Maybe on their own, by themselves, [these bills] seem harmless enough," said Gayle Ruzicka of Utah's Eagle Forum, but she noted, "they add up."

Sen. Greg Bell, R-Fruit Heights and a committee co-chairman, disagreed with the "slippery-slope" argument, even though he considers himself a culture-war "soldier" who helped to pass Utah's same-sex marriage ban in 2004.

Bell voted to recommend McCoy's bill.

"So long as we do not undermine traditional marriage," Bell said, "there are relationships in our society that do warrant some."

It is about time this state remove it's head from it's lower orifice. I understand that a religious majority rules this state, but one of the fine freedoms afforded to us all living in the US of A is that we can live wherever we want. It is about time some of the very harsh and religious based laws in this state be changed to afford EVERYONE the same and equal rights. Just cause we all don't wear the same style of underwear, does not mean we all should have to abide by religious law.

Grimace

So this is not much of a post, but I came across it and it made me laugh. Ahh, the good old days of McDonald's. Kids these days have no idea what they have missed out on.

Peace and love to all!!!

Slacker...No Longer I Am

So I know I have been slacking a bit on this blogging thing. Work has been a little overwhelming. For those who do not know, I work for an Advertising and Public Relations firm. I am like a mixture of the two assistants in The Devil Wears Prada, all balled into one. Sometimes hectic and sometimes drives me to drink, but I actually love it.

Have also been overwhelmed with a flurry of various emotions over the whole Prop 8 thing in California, and am amazed with the spur of protests that have and continue to spring up all over our fine nation. I am actually going to take my sign tomorrow morning and join in, have never felt the need to get political, until now. I have never in my life felt the surge of emotion and anger of this nature course through my veins. It scares me a little bit. My dear friend Julie, aka Whora, was kind enough to talk me through it yesterday, and reaffirmed to me that I need to channel my anger in a productive manner. So, if you see me, with my sign, out on the street tomorrow, you will know why. Life should not be lived as a second class citizen, and I am sick it. It is time for change.

Much peace and love to all!!! Until next time----Topher

Election 2008

Well last night absolutly blew me away. Obama took McCain, balled up him, stuck him in a pipe.......AND SMOKED HIM!!!! It reassures me that we as Americans still have a voice in a country that seems to be run by large corporations, lobbyists and special interest groups.

Sadly enough, Prop 8 in California passed, and hate and discrimination will be written into the California State Constitution. I cried when I read that. It baffles me and it hurts that in this day and age, all men are NOT created equal. My thoughts and prayers are with my friends in California, who are pissed and hurting the most.

And Chris Buttars, one of Utah's biggets racists, and biggots, and hate mongers, has retained his seat in the State Senate. His mouth has utterd some of the most hateful words, on the Senate floor, and still, people in his district love and support him. I have learned that the setbacks and discrimitory actions, that I once thought were set and caused by our goverment, should be blamed on the government. I stand corrected, the blame lies with the douchebags that voted and continue to vote people like Chris Buttars into office.

I am thankful that change is coming, but am bummed, because we as voters could have more change. Last night I distanced myself even more from the LDS faith. Their support and financial donations to support Prop 8 have shown me that much of what I was taught as a child, have no merit in the real world.Sadly enough that hate and discrimination will be written into the California State Constitution. Their support and financial donations to support Prop 8 have shown me that much of what I was taught as a child, have no merit in the real world. Why would I or anyone else want to be part of a organization that promotes unequality, hate, discrimination. Was it not a primary song that says "Jesus said love everyone, treat them kindly too.." I was taught that man was made in God's image.....that means God is part gay. I now hold my new former religion and those others that voted for Prop 8, in the same class as the Nazi's, KKK, and any other movement that can not respect and extend equality to all men and women that God hath created.

All I ask, is keep voting and making your voice heard, and hopefully some day....ALL MEN AND WOMEN WILL BE TREATED AS EQUAL!!!
